One definition: In mathematics “extrapolation” is the process of estimating, beyond the original observation range, the value of a variable on the basis of its relationship with another variable. Extrapolation may also apply to human experience to project, extend, or expand a known experience into an area not known or previously experienced so as to arrive at a usually conjectural knowledge of the unknown.—Joseph Michael Pizzuto
My definition: “extrapolations” began in the 1970s as a collection of two, intentionally consecutive 35mm captures, printed as one image to form one thought. It was an exercise to help me develop a wider vision. This exercise requires both visual discipline and mental interpretation.
With the transition to digital captures, I have grown the concept to include any two experiences that have a common fiber. That fiber that creates the connection is now unassigned by me, as varied as the subjects themselves, and ultimately defined by the viewer.
Bio
I was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, and began my photography explorations my freshman year of college at the University of Pittsburgh. After graduating with a BS in Economics, I chose employment at a retail photography corporation where I could utilize my education while following my passion for photography. I briefly operated at a commercial studio, and also worked as an industrial photographer for a large international corporation. In the 1970s I studied with Larry Fink, and since relocating to Atlanta I have been working with Chip Simone.
I have exhibited my work both nationally, including two solo exhibitions and numerous collective shows (one at the now defunct NYC Nikon House), and internationally, in France. Recent exhibitions at The Toledo Museum of Art, RoHo Gallery in Cincinnati Ohio, and several at the Atlanta Photography Group Gallery.
My work, including my “extrapolations” portfolio, has also been seen in several issues of Black and White magazine.
